Improving our Cacti Collection

For some years now the zoo has displayed a collection of cacti and succulents. Over the past two years this group of plants has been improved and added to. Please take time to look at these fascinating plants, they can be found in the Grow Zone.

As well as a general collection we in the Botanic Department are building a collection of several different genera which we are developing into a National Collection (http://www.nccpg.com). The genera we are currently working on are Ariocarpus, Epithelanthera, Frailea, Copiapoa, Matucana and Turbinicarpus. Many of these plants are endangered in the wild and come under CITES regulations and protection (http://www.ukcites.gov.uk). Anyone wishing to know more about the care of cacti and succulents can find lots of help and information from The British Cacti and Succulent Society BCSS (http://www.bcss.org.uk) or our Botanic staff.
