Please become an animal adopter. Take a share in the costs of Chester Zoo's massive animal food bill - over £200,000 per year - and play a direct part in the zoo’s conservation work.

Almost half of the 500+ species in the zoo are officially listed as being endangered, including several which are extinct or near extinct in the wild. Fifty years ago only two were in similar peril. That is the size of the task facing responsible zoos. By acting as life boats, we help protect species that otherwise face extinction - and that’s forever!

How it works

Anyone can join the adoption scheme for as little as £50 per year. Just pick your favourite animal/s from the list and decide how many 'shares' at £50 you would like. You can have a single share (or more) in any animal species.

We estimate it costs around £3,200 a year to feed an elephant – which is the value of 64 'shares'. Everything you give goes towards a central account for animal foodstuffs. Everything! The adoption runs for a full 12 months from whenever you start, and we will send you a renewal reminder the month before it expires.

You will understand that we often exchange animals with other zoos for breeding purposes, and - like us - they will eventually die. This is why your ‘adoption’ is for the whole group or species rather than an individual animal. If there is a change in policy and we no longer hold the species of animal you have adopted in the collection, we will contact you and ask if you want to transfer to another group.

What you get

As well as the great feeling that you are actually doing something practical to help conservation at one of the world class zoos, you get an A4 sized certificate, just ready to frame, 4 issues of ‘Z’ our full colour magazine and an invitation to attend one of our adopters days. For most species we are also able to include an image of the animal. For every £50 'share', you will receive 2 complimentary tickets which you can use at any time during the year of your adoption. We also show all adopters names on 'thank you' boards at the enclosures. Select ‘Fantastic Benefits’ to see a picture of the adoption pack.
