Conservation, Science and Education
We’re committed to preventing wildlife extinction and raising awareness around key conservation and environmental challenges across the UK and the world. By working in partnership, we bring together world-leading expertise in education, conservation, scientific research and policy to take a holistic approach to complex conservation issues.
Our integrated approach
Together with our partners, we focus on four key areas that will make a real lasting change for the future.
Conservation starts here
Chester Zoo is at the heart of our conservation work and the hub of activity for our diverse world-leading experts. As well as thousands of animals, we care for critical endangered plant collections comprising of more than 2,500 species.
Outside of Chester, we continue our work globally, spanning across 61 field projects, 19 countries, working with 63 partner organisations and governments.
International Conservation Academy
Over 120,000 school children visit Chester Zoo every year and are an essential part our conservation education work, empowering them to be part of the solution and creating a future where nature can survive and thrive. But our education work doesn’t end there.
Our International Conservation Acadamy allows us to inspire people from early years through to young people and adults. Our experts are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of conservationists by developing conservation curriculum, helping people access conservation careers, professional development, and working with Universities, Scholars and Fellows.

International Centre for Zoo Science
Over the last 20 years, we have developed our science hub here at Chester into a world class facility. Our team of research and science professionals work closely together with partners across the world to share and develop expertise and knowledge to tackle conservation issues.
We focus on identifying the challenges faced by our natural world and using innovative ways to solve the most complex of conservation problems. We work with partners within both the zoo community and academic institutions to develop evidence based approaches to preventing extinction.
