Dried, crushed and then burnt to create a pungent smoke, they are used by Assamese people to deter elephants who may otherwise trample their crops and villages. Chillies can also be used to curry favour with struggling villagers by providing an alternative crop and therefore a new source of income. When this happens, our dedicated keepers have to hand rear the youngsters, feeding up to six times a day with as much as nine litres of creamy gold top milk.
