Whether you buy an adoption for yourself or as a gift you’ll be making a vital contribution to help wildlife thrive around the world.

Black rhinos are critically endangered. Wild populations continue to rapidly decline due to illegal hunting and poaching for their horn. With your help, we believe our conservation research can influence the sustainability of endangered species and inspire others to join us in our challenge to protect our planet’s biodiversity.

Together we can help save this impressive species from extinction.

How does Chester Zoo help black rhino in the wild?

Chester Zoo works with a wide range of people and organisations, across many projects worldwide.

We’ve been helping to support the conservation of critically endangered black rhino in Kenya since 1999. We’re working closely with the Kenyan Government and several in-country partners to apply the same scientific tools that we use to support the species in zoos to help inform their management in the wild.

Chester Zoo is home to the only zoo-based animal endocrinology lab in Europe, and it’s here where our scientists have developed the skills and techniques to track hormone levels in rhinos. This provides key insights into their physiology and has not only helped to support breeding efforts for eastern black rhino across zoos in Europe but also to benefit populations in Kenya. Watch our new film for more.

Black rhino adoptions provide key funds for these vital efforts and other conservation projects that both support communities and help to prevent extinction globally.
