What is the PalmOil Scan app?
This resource is a powerful tool in educating and engaging young people on the importance of supporting sustainable palm oil to help preserve wildlife and rainforests and is a great way to engage students in a digital activity which helps conservation.
The PalmOil Scan app allows users to scan product barcodes to check whether companies are sourcing palm oil sustainably. It ranks companies globally based on their commitment to sustainable practices, classifying them as excellent, good, poor, or having no commitment to sustainability. By using the app, shoppers can actively contribute to reducing deforestation and protecting endangered species like orangutans in South East Asia, which are significantly affected by palm oil production.
The app provides a clear rating system that highlights which companies are leading the way in sustainability and those that need improvement. It also enables users to alert companies about their purchasing decisions, encouraging positive changes in supply chains.
The PalmOil Scan app was developed by Chester Zoo in collaboration with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)
