Illegal wildlife trade outreach project
What to expect
The first in school workshop will expand the students’ vocabulary by teaching them important terminology such as passerine, endangered and native. By the end of the session they will be able to identify some native birds by sight and by sound and identify some of the songbird species that live in Bali in Indonesia.
The next in school workshop will focus on Indonesian songbirds. Your students will learn about the pet trade and the devastation it is causing. We’ll explore the IUCN red list and conservation status of the birds and discuss how bird populations are monitored and allow them to try it for themselves by taking part in a bird watch in the school grounds.
The last in school workshop is about empowering the children and showing them how they can help. It will teach them how to help birds both across the world in Indonesia and right back home here in the UK. They will take part in creative activities to make things for the birds, such as bird feeders, that they can take home.
During your school trip to the zoo you will meet with one of our team for a short session with an activity and tour around our animal habitats to see the birds that are native to Indonesia and recap some of things we learnt.
The delivery offer includes:
- A virtual Kickstarter meeting to introduce the school staff to the project, additional FREE learning resources that we have on offer, and ideas for how the teachers can make this a cross-curricular project for all year groups.
- 3 Conservation Educator led interactive workshops in the school setting for each class
- Free entrance for participating classes to Chester Zoo including teaching and activities led by the education team.
This project offer is aimed at KS2 but can be adapted to a slightly higher or lower Key Stage on request.
