The fact file highlights their important role in maintaining forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds and controlling insect populations. It also provides details about their solitary nature and their ability to climb trees with their large, curved claws. This resource encourages learners to understand the importance of conservation efforts to protect these vulnerable animals from extinction due to habitat loss and poaching.

Native to the tropical forests of South East Asia, these bears are known for the distinctive yellow or orange crescent on their chest, which resembles the rising or setting sun. The fact file explores their omnivorous diet, which includes fruits, insects, and honey. Sun bears use their long tongues to extract honey from hives, earning them the nickname "honey bears."

Unfortunately, sun bears face significant threats from deforestation and illegal hunting, particularly due to the demand for bear parts in traditional medicine.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the diet, behaviour, and habitat of sun bears.

  • Explore the threats posed by deforestation and illegal hunting.

  • Learn about the conservation efforts to protect sun bears and their role in forest ecosystems.
