This resource helps learners explore the world of invertebrates, which make up 97% of all animal species on the planet. This resource introduces students to the diverse shapes and sizes of invertebrates, highlighting their important role in ecosystems.

The resource includes a spotter sheet that encourages students to observe and record different types of invertebrates they find, classifying them into groups such as arthropods, molluscs, and annelids. It’s a hands-on activity that helps children understand the differences between these groups, focusing on characteristics like the number of legs and body structure.

This resource is ideal for teaching the basics of classification and biodiversity, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts. By identifying invertebrates in their local environment, students can gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of life and the importance of conservation. The activity is both educational and interactive, helping students connect theoretical concepts to practical examples.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the key characteristics of invertebrates and their role in ecosystems.

  • Learn to classify invertebrates into groups based on traits like leg count and body structure.

  • Engage in hands-on learning by identifying and recording invertebrates in the local environment.

  • Develop an appreciation for biodiversity and conservation efforts.
