This learning resource is designed to help young people explore the use of palm oil in everyday products.

It encourages students to investigate which items in their cupboards at home, or in the classroom,  contain palm oil and highlights the importance of sustainable sourcing.  By using a simple tick sheet, students can identify products that contain palm oil and determine whether it is sustainably sourced, promoting awareness about the environmental impacts of unsustainable palm oil production.

Through this investigation, students can think critically about the supply chain, explore the role of certification such as the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and make informed choices that support conservation.

This hands-on activity provides an excellent opportunity for learners to connect their household habits with broader environmental issues, supporting wildlife in rainforests like those in Borneo and Sumatra and sustainable living.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify products containing palm oil and whether they are sustainably sourced.

  • Understand the impact of unsustainable palm oil production on rainforests and wildlife.

  • Develop research and analytical skills by investigating everyday products.
