Chester Zoo is at the forefront of protecting UK wildlife - starting here in the north west. We’re creating new spaces for UK wildlife such as otters, kingfishers, hedgehogs, bees and secretive birds such as snipe and water rail to thrive. We’re also helping to recover species and lost biodiversity by transforming a 10-mile stretch of habitat between Chester and Ellesmere Port - planting new wildflower meadows, orchards and hedgerows, and creating new ponds and wetlands.
Our nature reserve is home to a wide range of incredible local and national wildlife, including kingfishers, hedgehogs and harvest mice. It is designated as a ‘Local Wildlife Site’ for the important plants, birds and invertebrates that live here – providing a protected habitat for vulnerable species, as well as a corridor of habitat that allows them to move through the landscape when they need to. Over the years, we have been monitoring the different species that use the nature reserve, including those that use it as a permanent home, as a feeding ground or even a place to breed.

We urgently need your support

Your support will enable us to create, restore and enhance habitats across the Northwest. From ponds to meadows, waterways to hedgerows, woodlands to orchards - UK wildlife is relying on us to save their habitats and give species recovery a chance. Donate to our UK Wildlife Needs Us appeal and help to protect the green spaces we love from further biodiversity loss.

Our charity is leading Networks for Nature - a project in which we're creating a thriving, more connected, wildlife-rich landscape across Northwest Cheshire for the benefit of nature and people. Covering 60 square miles from Ellesmere Port to Chester, this work will drive nature recovery, make nature more accessible, and empower communities to protect and restore nature.

Why your donation matters

As a conservation charity we rely on donations to continue all of our vital species-saving work and to ensure nature can survive and thrive.

The UK is one of the most biodiversity depleted countries in the world, with 1 in 6 UK species at risk of extinction. We must act now before it's too late for UK nature.

Please support our UK Nature Needs Us appeal today.
