Heart of Africa

The first residents of Heart of Africa, we have two amazing herds in this area. Giraffes are nature’s gentle giants, growing up to six metres tall.

Zebras are the most striking species in the horse family. Each individual has a unique stripe pattern, just like a human fingerprint.

They deter threats by spitting venom into their eyes and blinding them. They can spit their venom as far as 2.5 metres.

Aardvarks have a long snout, pointy ears and short, powerful limbs with shovel-shaped claws, making them excellent diggers.

Meerkats love to forage, burrow, groom each other, wrestle and play. They’re also fantastic diggers.

They have hollow quills in their tail, which they shake to make a rattling sound to warn predators that they’re dangerous.

These birds nest and roost in trees, most nests being in acacia or baobabs.

Fierce fighters, but these antelope are still very social, travelling in large groups.

Juvenile birds often nomadic throughout the species's range in response to water-level changes.

‘Bles’ is the Afrikaans word for blaze, which refers to the white marking down their face.

They will vote on when to hunt by sneezing. The sneezes made by dominant dogs are more important than lower-ranking dogs.

They have a long, flexible nose called a proboscis. It helps them forage for food and allows them to cool down through breathing.

The largest living bird species, the common ostric can run for a long time at a speed of up to 34mph.
